Location

Kamionek is part of Warsaw located on the right bank of the river Vistula.

It takes only 10 minutes to get to the city centre from Kamionek.

A brief history and key facts

First settlement occurred around 4000 BC (Palaeolithic).

The first written mention about Kamionek comes from 1065. Kamionek (Camen in Latin) was at that time the place of trade and a river crossing point.

Kamionek is associated with the beginning of democracy in Poland - the first free election of the king took place here in 1573. European dynasties competed to win the throne of Poland.

The candidates were Ernest Habsburg (son of the Emperor of Austria), Henry Valois from dynasty of France, Ivan the Fourth the Terrible (Tsar of Russia) and John Vasa the Third (King of Sweden and Duke of Finland). The Polish gentry gathered on the fields of Kamionek in 1573 and elected Henry de Valois.

During the election of 1573, the first constitution was adopted on the fields of Kamion (while the Constitution of the United States of America, generally recognized as the first one worldwide, was signed 220 years later and Poland's Constitution of May 3 as late as 1791).?

One more election was held in Kamionek. In 1733 Frederick Augustus the Second, Prince Elector of Saxony was elected as Augustus the Third, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.

After defeating the defenders, the Russian field marshal Alexander Suvorov ordered to raze the whole district and murder all the inhabitants. The victims were buried at the local cemetery.
